What to expect from your Reflexology treatment

A reflexologist will work on stimulating various points (usually) on your hands or feet. These points relate to points on your body and by stimulating them it is believed it can help balance and support physical and emotional issues.

Most reflexologists offer foot reflexology but may also offer hand reflexology, especially if foot reflexology isn’t appropriate.

Your reflexologist will take a detailed consultation to ensure there are not any contraindications.

For foot reflexology you will need to remove your shoes and socks. Your reflexologist may ask you to sit in a reclining chair, or use a massage couch. They will start by cleansing your feet and then apply a reflexology wax or balm. This allows them to move their fingers and thumbs more smoothly over your feet.

Starting on one foot, they will work the reflex points. It should not be painful but some areas can be particularly sensitive or tender. Once your reflexologist has worked both feet they may go back to any areas they found to be out of balance to rework these.

They may do some energy work, this is a light touch on various points of the feet. When they have finished you will be given some time to relax, you may be feeling a bit light headed, and offered some water to help keep you hydrated.

Your reflexologist will usually ask you how you are feeling and if you found any points tender. They will also discuss what they have found and will advise you of aftercare which could include some hand reflex points you can use in your own self-care. It is important to note that reflexology is not a diagnosis or cure, it should be used to support your general health.

Reflexology is particularly safe and most people can receive reflexology, including those with cancer. Your reflexologist will adjust their pressure and to suit your needs, and may recommend a shorter treatment. Lots of people use reflexology to help reduce symptoms, for example, to support perimenopause, MS, migraine, or IBS. It is also good for those suffering from anxiety, insomnia or depression as it can help you to relax deeply. 

To qualify as a reflexologist iit will usually take anything from 9 months to a year to complete and will include submitting a range of case studies and practical assessment. When choosing a reflexologist ensure you look for someone with a professional membership, such as the FHT or AoR.
