What to expect from your aromatherapy massage

An aromatherapy massage is similar in many ways to a Swedish massage except your aromatherapist will create a bespoke blend of essential oils for your specific needs.

Like any other massage, your aromatherapist will use a massage oil, but unlike some other massages who may just use a nut or vegetable oil, or a pre-blended oil (this is one that has been created by a separate company for general use, like Neals Yard or Tisserand, to name a few) your aromatherapist will choose a blend of up to three essential oils tailored to you. So, for example, if you are having some muscular or joint problems, your aromatherapist may choose oils with anti-inflammatory or analgesic properties. If you want something to relax you or are feeling anxious they may choose a calming essential oil or one with serotonin boosing properties. This means your blend will be created uniquely for you. Importantly, as your aromatherapist is well trained, they will take a detailed consultation so they can ensure there are not any contraindications. This is where an essential oil may have a negative effect due to a health condition or medication. If you are in the first trimester of your pregnancy your aromatherapist may suggest you wait until the second trimester for an aromatherapy massage unless specifically trained.

Your aromatherapist will tell you what clothes you need to remove and provide you with a safe place to do this. They will instruct you how to lie on the couch, make sure you are comfortable, and talk you through what to expect. After your massage you will be given some time to relax, you may be feeling a bit light headed or woozy, and offered some water to help keep you hydrated.

They will also advise you of aftercare, how you could include essential oils in your own self-care, and what to do in a case of an adverse reaction. It is always best to leave the oils on so they can continue working after your massage.

To qualify as an aromatherapist it will usually take anything from 9 months to a year to complete and will include submitting a range of case studies and practical assessment. When choosing an aromatherapy massage ensure you look for someone with a professional membership, such as the FHT or ChTA.
